Kigezi youths leaders are trading accusations over the abrupt cancellation of a planned visit by President Yoweri Museveni. Recently, Kigezi Youth Allied Development Association announced a plan to hold a youth convention at White Horse Inn in Kabale Municipality on July 02.
President Museveni was expected to be chief guest, but the meeting was called off abruptly on the grounds he didn’t receive the invitation for the function. David Mafabi, the private secretary to the president in charge of political affairs says they learnt about the function through the state machinery yet the president was not aware of the invite.
He explains that they had to call off the function because Museveni had other important engagements. Mafabi denied claims by some of the youths that Museveni stopped the convention because the Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi was also invited.
Darius Nandida, the Kabale resident District commissioner says the organizers of the convention didn’t follow the right procedure to invite the president. He faults the organizers for mobilizing participants and setting a date for the convention without receiving confirmation from the president.
He says they are considering meeting the youth groups to calm down their anger.
But Brian Twasiima, the Chairperson Kigezi youth Allied Development Association rubbishes claims that they didn’t follow the right channels in inviting the president, adding that, even the RDC endorsed their invitation. Twasima says it is unfortunate that the RDC claims that they disregarded procedure when he is the one who guided them on what to do.
Sam Arinaitwe, the Kabale district youth Council chairperson says there was a problem with the planning process.
He says that the conference has since been called off until when the issues surrounding all the preparations are clear.
