Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) captain Deo Akope knows the task ahead of him competing against renowned professionals like Adilson Da Silva at this year’s Zambia Open that has a Shs300m winners prize.
Da Silva won last year’s Zambia Sugar Open at Lusaka Golf Club, and he returns this year in good form to a tournament of the same name which is happening just three weeks after the ‘other’ Zambia Open but Uganda’s best Akope posted a rather a horrific show at the 2014 Barclays Kenya Open at Karen Country Club in Nairobi much back in February.
“I know the kind of competition am facing here in Lusaka,” Akope tells Red Pepper in an online chat.
South Africa’s Wallie Coetsee, the man who won the Mopani Copper Mines Zambia Open in Kitwe three weeks ago, is another who Akope is definitely wary of at the tournament will be played over 72 holes and tees off on Thursday.
“Since Monday I have been trying to master the course so I’m up to the task and prepared for these guys. I always believe I can do well against any opponent,” said the 36-year-old golfer.
I have been here since Monday trying to master the course,” the MTN sponsored star says.
The Civil Engineering graduate from Kyambogo University first played in Zambia during the 2007 edition and finished 25th overall and only travelled back again in 2011 only to fall a place down.
After the Zambian chase, Akope will later this year will be taking part in the Rwanda Open in July, the Uganda Open, the KCB golf series, the Namibia Open and also the Nigeria Open.
