Unidentified thugs have raided St. Johns Church of Uganda in Masaka Municipality and disappeared with church property worth millions of shillings.
The thugs broke into the church on Wednesday night and made off a music system, console, projector, two key boards, a computer set, digital camera and 1.5million shillings.
Rev. Canon Gasta Nsereko, the VicarSt. Johns Church of Uganda says he went to open the church in the morning; was surprised to find it open.
According to Nsereko, he checked around only to find almost everything taken and the safe broken into. He says that when he looked around, he couldn’t find Joseph Kafeero, the security officer attached to the church.
Preliminary investigations show Kafeero was not on duty when the robbery took place.
Rev. Amos Friday, the assistant vicar says the theft is a big setback to the church. He says the suspects cut through the fence to gain access to the church.
He says they found the bag that is used to keep the projector dumped at the fence next to Total Petrol Station along Masaka-Mbarara Highway.
A team of detectives from Masaka central police detectives visited the affected church this morning and declared it a crime scene.
Noah Sserunjoji, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson says they have started investigating the incident. He also says they have recorded statements from the priests at the church to document what exactly was stolen.
Police is also hunting for Kafeero who is still at large. By the time of filing this story, several Christians were still flocking the church to see what had happened.
