Sudan Petitions ICGLR over “Uganda meddling”

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir.

Sudan has petitioned the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) over suggestions that Uganda was violating its sovereignty by aiding and abetting Sudanese rebels. The Sudan Tribune newspaper reported on Sunday that government official Kamal Osman Ali had confirmed petitioning the bloc before taking the same complaint to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Ali said last year’s ICGLR summit had discussed Khartoum’s concern about Uganda’s alleged meddling in its internal affairs by actively supporting rebel groups fighting for greater autonomy in their regions or to bring down the Sudanese government.

The Arabic language Alyoum Altaly newspaper also quoted the same official as saying that Uganda has been hosting the rebel leaders of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF), an allegation which Kampala had vehemently denied.

Kampala and Khartoum have, in the past, traded accusations of supporting each other’s rebel groups.

Last month, a senior Ugandan government official accused the Sudanese government of resuming its support for rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

Khartoum had dismissed the claim as ludicrous.
