The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party is considering disciplinary action against former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya who openly campaigned for an opposition candidate in Luweero yesterday.

Deputy Government Chief Whip, David Bahati says Bukenya contravened the NRM constitution and the code of conduct by campaigning against the official party flag bearer.

Although the NRM endorsed Rebecca Balwana Nalwanga as the official flag bearer in the district By-election scheduled for Thursday May 22 , Prof. Bukenya, a high ranking Party official yesterday joined opposition politicians to campaign for Brenda Nabukenya, a DP Stalwart in the race.

He reportedly used the public rally at Luweero Sports Ground to praise DP and FDC leadership in Luweero for fielding a single candidate saying the unity between the two parties opened a new chapter that would help the opposition to attain power.

But David Bahati described the event as unfortunate adding that Bukenya as a former vice president and NRM chairperson for Wakiso District could not have engaged in acts of indiscipline and defying the principles he has promoted over the years.  He said this was a bad precedent set by a high ranking official within the NRM ranks.

Bahati maintains that although NRM as a party accommodates dissenting views and cherishes values of reconciliation, consensus and debate, Bukenya’s move is intolerable and calls for action.

Meanwhile Prof.  Gilbert Bukenya told journalists in Kampala today that Uganda does not need parties anymore but needs unity as a strong foundation for democracy.

He rubbished reports that he is due to face disciplinary action saying the NRM has no moral authority to act against him on account of indiscipline since it also lacks discipline.

He says actions of intimidation and intolerance against opposition camps in Luweero prove that the ruling party is undisciplined and unfair to its opponents.

Last year, the NRM expelled four of its members for flouting Rule 4 of the NRM constitution which prohibits the use of foul language and campaigning against official party flag bearers in elections, being an agent of foreign agents to the detriment of the party and willfully spreading malicious propaganda.

  1. Equally disciplinary action shd be taken against the leader NRM, who satirically disrespected an opposition contestant by calling her silly little girl. He clearly made a spectacle of himself
