Anti-riot Police has deployed heavily at Kasana Taxi Park in Luweero town council to block a planned rally and procession by Brenda Nabukenya, one of the candidates in the Luweero By-Election.
Opposition supporters had started converging at Kasana Taxi Park ahead of the afternoon rally. The rally is expected to feature Opposition leaders, Mugisha Muntu, Kizza Besigye, Norbert Mao and a cross section of members of parliament.
Our Reporter at the scene describes the mood as tense as anti-riot Police under the command of the officer in Field Force Unit Samuel Bamuzibire condones off the Place claiming its not suitable for a public rally.
Police argues that a rally in a place by the roadside may compromise traffic along the Kampala-Gulu highway and threaten business in the nearby market.
Bamuzibire ordered the opposition candidate to instead change the venue and hold the rally at Kasana Playground an option which was rejected by opposition supporters.
Suleiman Kidandala, the Kampala Deputy Mayor accused Police of discrimination and flouting electoral Laws. He explains that other candidates in the race have previously held rallies at the same spot without any report of traffic or business being compromised.
By press time, Nabukenya’s Supporters were still in Taxi Park chatting Praises for their candidate while accusing police of being partisan and biased.
The by Election for Luweero Woman Member of Parliament is scheduled on Thursday 22nd May 2014.
The race has attracted four candidates NRM’S Rebecca Nalwanga, DPs Brenda Nabukenya and Independent candidates Ramulah Kadala and Faridah Namubiru.
