2 Soldiers, Civilian To Serve 40 Years In Jail For Murder

The second division army court martial has sentenced two soldiers and a civilian to serve 40 years in jail for murder.

The trio was found guilty of killing Dan Amumpiire, a businessman in Bushenyi in October 2010.

The convicts are Corporal Griffin Rubihirwa alias Katiku whose service number is RA 173887, Private Rub Wandugu whose number is RA 175017 and Elizabeth Kyomuhangi, a civilian.

Private Wandugu was sentenced in absentia as he is still at large after he escaped from prison warders as he was being driven back to Mbarara central prison from attending one of the court martial sessions at the 2nd Division army headquarters in Mbarara Municipality.

Court chaired by Col. Geoffrey Mujuni had that Elizabeth Kyomuhangi, the wife to the deceased, connived with the two soldiers to eliminate her husband.

Prosecution led by Lieutenant Alex Rasto Mukhwana told court that on the night of 15th October 2010 at Katikamwe in Kyabugyimbi sub county, Bushyenyi district, Kyomuhangi left the door to their marital house open to grant the assailants access to kill Dan Amumpiire.

Prosecution further told court that the deceased’s marriage had gone sour after Kyomuhangi started having extra marital affairs with Corporal Griffin Rubihirwa.

The defense lawyer Captain Paul Rwambogo prayed for a lenient sentence since the accused persons are sole bread winners for their families and having served the Government for many years. This however, did not stop court martial chairman to grant a harsh sentence to the accused.

Col. Mujuni sentenced each of the accused to 40 years in prison to have them separated from the rest of the community since they are wrong doers.
