More than 10,000 health professionals across the country are operating illegally, Dr Patrick Kibirango, the Registrar of the Allied Health Professionals Council has revealed.
Kibirango says that only 4,921 out of the 15,000 health professional who presented them to the council since it was established have practicing licenses.
Kibirango disclosed this on Tuesday while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises-COSASE to answer to audit queries in the Auditor General’s report for the 2007/2008 financial year.
He was responding to a query by Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the committee chairperson on the number of registered health professionals in Uganda.
Florence Namayanja, the Bukoto East County asked how the Council deals with health professionals who refuse to register since there are many imposters across the country.
Kibirango explained that the Council had opened up regional offices and appointed district supervisors who run a data base in each region to track down impostors and unlicensed health professionals. He says once they identify professional with forged certificates and licenses they are penalized and their names published in the media.
