It was all pomp at Copper Chimney, former Oasis Restaurant in Lugogo when Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) president , Ambrose Tashobya and the National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU) in conjunction with Wananchi Satellite Group launched the Zuku university basketball league.
The 10 team league, that received the full blessing of the parent body of all universities in Uganda, the National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU), is the second beneficial of ZUKU’s generosity of sports in the region, after Kenya.
The ZUBL tipped-off this month at Makerere but the start was somewhat overshadowed by the withdrawal from the tournament of KIU and Nkumba, two of the best universities in local basketball.
But the move has not been received well by members of the closely-knit basketball fraternity who see a university league as a crucial part in the development cycle of players.
National Council of Sports general secretary, Jasper Aligawesa who was present to witness the event challenged ZUKU to spread to the other sporting events in the country.
Kisubi Brothers University College, Uganda Christian University, Makerere University, St Lawrence University, Cavendish University, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Ndejje University, Bugema University and Kampala University are the 10 universities that will take part in this year’s championships
“We are glad for ZUKU T.V and the participating universities. As NUSFU, we plan to attract more and more teams on board so that the league gets across the entire country”, NUSFU’s vice president, Vincent Kisenyi remarked.
Only university students not older than 25 years are eligible to play in this tournament whose main motive among others is to provide a plat form for raw talent search and grooming.
