The 2014 Bamburi Rugby Super Series has introduced various changes to the tournament geared to make the competition more intense.
This year’s tournament will be contested by six teams, two of which Victoria and Rwenzori will be from Uganda. Kenya will be represented by four franchises namely defending champions Ndovu, Papa, Kifaru and Chui.
Uganda Rugby Union chairman, Andrew Owor said the Ugandan franchises which will be selected from the local mini-series will be in good shape for the tournament.
“BRSS tournament provides a good platform to for players to benefit from regional exposure,” said Mr. Owor adding that the chance to play in the BRSS will be cut-throat with over 120 top quality players fighting for the chance.
“Hima Cement’s contribution also benefits our rugby coaches and management to get regional exposure and adopt the best practices in running rugby matters,” he added.
Another innovation for the 2014 tournament is the “Supa Sato” concept that sees all match days take place at a single venue. Kampala will play host to four teams on match day one, Kakamega hosting match day two, Nakuru hosting match day three, Machakos hosting the semi finals with Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds hosting the final which will serve as a curtain raiser to the Kenya – Western Province international friendly which takes place on June 7.
“This package is a show of continued support to developing the sports talent in Uganda and the whole region. Rugby continues to show great potential in Uganda,” said Hima Cement General Manager, Daniel Petersson while presenting the Sh50 million dummy cheque in Kampala.
This year’s tournament is the 6th in which Uganda is participating. In the past years, other corporates have joined in to co-sponsor the tournament seeing to its success. This generous gesture is expected to continue in 2014 and beyond.
