3 Cops Netted For Aiding Escape Of 8 Suspects
Kalungu Police are holding 3 of their own accused of aiding 8 suspects to escape from custody. The suspects are Francis Musango, Mark Atukwase and Rajab Kamazana.
The trio was on duty when the suspects escaped from custody at Kalungu Central Police Station on Monday night during a heavy down pour.
However, they remained tightlipped on the escape of the suspects until when Martin Okoyo, the Kalungu District Police Commander discovered the anomaly during the suspect’s parade.
Maxwell Ogwal, the Southern Regional Police Commander says that the three cops will face disciplinary action.
Ogwal says the police suspects face charges of neglect of duty. He explains they have re-arrested one of the escapees but doesn’t divulge details saying it may jeopardize their investigations.
Ogwal however says the remaining escapees including a one Nasser Kalungi are still at large and adds that Police’s CID and Interpol departments as well other other sister intelligence agencies are already alerted to nab them and be brought to book.
Kalungi was had been picked from Kampala on 12th January 2007 over allegations that he was behind a group of youths who were protesting against Museveni’s victory in 2006 presidential elections.
It is reported that Nasser was funding this group through their top leaders such that they can cause chaos in Kampala thereby putting President Museveni on tenterhooks after accusing him of rigging election against FDC’s presidential candidate, Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Government was reportedly planning to parade him as one of the witnesses in Besigye’s cases. It should be noted that this is the very Kalungi whom government gave a lot of money to defect from Besigye’s camp and turn against him by witnessing against him in various court cases.
Acording to Ogwal, Police believes that Kalungi connived with these police officers and gave them money to let him escape after which he fled to Europe, and that’s why they notified Interpol to follow him.
Ogwal however, admits that the cells in which the suspects were being held are in a sorry state.
Cases of suspects escaping from police cells are becoming rampant in the Southern region. The last case was reported at Lyantonde police station where seven suspects broke the cell door and escaped to their freedom.
Two hard core criminal suspects also escaped recently from Masaka central Police station.
