Government has released UGX 10billion to facilitate the construction of a modern maternity ward and a children ward at Masaka referral hospital.
The four storied structure will have several Gynecology Units, Antenatal and Neonatal centers, Labour and Post-natal Wards. It will also have a Pediatric and Nutrition Unit and an Adolescent Health Unit.
Eleazer Mugisha, the Masaka Hospital Principal Administrator says the current facility is in a very appalling state. Some patients sleep in corridors due to lack of space while others are discharged shortly after delivery even when they still need medical attention, He explains.
Dr. Florence Tugumisirize, the Masaka Hospital Director says government has made a partial release of UGX 700m to kick start the construction of the 412 bed capacity ward. It’s expected that upon its completion the facility will decongest the currently ruined maternity and children ward.
Dr. Tugumisirize says if the construction of this modern facility is done within two years, Masaka Hospital will address congestion. She says that the current maternity ward has a bed capacity of one hundred persons which are too few compared to the number of expectant mothers visiting the hospital.
Margret Ntambaazi, the Assistant Masaka District Medical officer says the construction of this facility will improve health services in the region. She says many mothers are still forced to seek the services of traditional birth attendants’ because of the congestion at Masaka Hospital.
Ntambaazi has however asked patients with minor complications to seek medical services at lower health units instead of congesting Masaka Regional Hospital which is supposed to handle complex cases.
Janipher Namusu, a patient at Masaka Hospital says she is also excited about the plans to construct a new maternity ward. She has however asked government to increase the number of nurses at Masaka Hospital saying there are currently few.
