Kasese district has blacklisted 22 private primary schools for operating below the minimum standards set by the Education Ministry.

This brings to 50, the number of schools of blacklisted in the district for operating below the minimum standards. Thirty other schools were closed early this month on similar grounds.

On Tuesday, a team of officials led by Emmy Kayiri, the Kasese Municipal Education Officer carried out an on spot inspection of schools. The officials closed some schools such as Riverside charity, Standard Infant school, Simirin Muslim primary school, Dory Kindergarten, Calvary Christian salaam parents, Young star and Golden academy saying they were not conducive for learning.

Others are Lord Orphanage centre, Hero’s child ministry, Edsa primary school, Alfa children ministry, Tropical junior, Destiny preparatory school and Kasese parent’s progressive among others. The officials directed the school administration to transfer the pupils to the neighbouring schools, which are authorized to operate.

According to Kayiri, some of the schools were found operating in tiny classrooms, lacked qualified teachers and sanitary facilities.

Amos Bwambale, the director Calvary Christian salaam parents says there are many unlicensed clinics and hotels in the district and wonders why the enforcement was only targeting schools and teachers.

He regretted as to why he joined the teaching profession, who he claimed are under looked. But Emmy Kayiri, the Kasese Municipal Education Officer will not have any of this. Kayiri says all the affected schools will remain closed until they meet the minimum operating standards.
