New Unicef Boss Starts Work

Aida GirmaEthiopian native Aida Girma is the UNICEF Representative in Uganda. She took up her position this week.

Prior to her appointment as head of UNICEF Uganda, Ms. Girma served as UNICEF Representative in South Africa from 2008 to 2013 and Malawi from 2003 to 2008.

Ms Girma joined UNICEF in 1991 and has since worked in various capacities. In addition to the positions of Representative in Malawi and South Africa, Ms. Girma served as Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Mozambique and Somalia. She also worked as programme planning and health systems specialist.

She holds an M.Sc. in Development Economics concentrating in Community Development, from New Hampshire College, Manchester, New Hampshire, USA, as well as a B.Sc. in International Development (Human Services), from the same institution.  She studied Business Administration in an undergraduate programme at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin and obtained a Certificate in Management and Financing of Health Programmes in Developing Countries from Harvard University, School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts., USA in 1995.

Ms. Girma is married and is the mother of an eight year-old son.  She is fluent in English and French.

On 13th January 2014, the new UNICEF Representative in Uganda, Ms. Aida Girma, presented her credentials to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Cooperation), Hon. Asuman Kiyingi.
