Ghana 1-0 Ethiopia

Libya 2-2 Congo

Kwabina Adusei’s second-half penalty booked Ghana’s place in the Knockout Stages of the 2014 Orange African Nations Championship as Group C winners.

GhanaThe Black Stars beat whipping-boys Ethiopia 1-0 in an encounter played at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening.

The Walia Antelopes bowed out of the competition without accumulating a single point or finding the back of the net.

Black Stars mentor Maxwell Konadu made four changes to the side that were held by Libya last time out.

With talisman Yahaya Mohammed suspended and Sulley Mohammed injured, Seidu Bansey started as the lone striker upfront.

Meanwhile, Walia Antelopes boss Sewnet Bishaw only made one change to the side that lost 1-0 to Congo. Mentsenot Umema was included in the starting XI in place of the suspended Asrat Gobena.

The Black Stars started the game stronger of the two sides, going close as early as the fourth minute through Bansey.

The striker beat the keeper in air, but was he unable to direct his resulting effort on target with an open net lurking.

Mohamed Latif should’ve done better in his effort in the 19th minute. The midfielder did well to mug an opposition defender before making a strong run into the area, his effort though left a lot to be desired.
The Walia Antelopes, who went into the encounter knowing that no matter the result they would be heading back home after two successive defeats started to find their feet as the half drew to a close.

First Omod Omod’s header attempt flashed just wide of Stephan Adams goal following a free-flowing move in the 37th minute before skipper Adane Gebreyes saw his spectacular over-head effort go inches over the crossbar.

Despite the promising attacking football in display from both teams in the first stanza, the half ended goalless.

Both sides continued to press forward in the second stanza with notably Michael Akuffo’s curling free-kick going just wide of Bushra’s right hand post in the 58th minute.

The Black Stars finally found the breakthrough in the 76th minute from the penalty spot.

Salahadin Hussen fouled Bancey inside the box, Kwabina Adusei duly stepped up and placed the ball past Bushra to send the West Africans through to the knockout stages.

With Libya and Congo playing to a 2-2 draw in the other Group C encounter, Ghana finished as group winners while the Mediterranean Knights progressed as group runners-up.
