Woman Gets 13 Years For Attempted Murder

A court in Lira has sentenced a woman to 13 years in jail for the attempted murder of her dead husband.
Finella Atim (27) was sentenced on Friday evening by a High Court sitting presided over by Judge Simon Byamukama Mugenyi.

Atim was found guilty of the attempted murder of her late husband Dr. Brian Okello. Dr. Okello was the former-in-charge of Amolator Health Centre IV.

Court heard that on October 30, 2011, Atim poured hot cooking oil onto Okello’s face and mouth while the deceased was asleep.

Dr. Okello was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital in critical condition. He made a partial recovery and was discharged but died two months later while staying at Bweyogerere, a Kampala suburb, in January 2012.

Atim, a software engineer by profession, did not plead guilty to the charge. She, however, expressed remorse over her actions and said she had changed during the two years she has been on remand.

Her lawyer Bosco Obonyo Twonto of Twonto and Company Advocates attempted unsuccessfully to have the charge dismissed.

In handing down the sentence, Judge Mugenyi ruled that there was no evidence to prove that Dr. Okello died because of Atim’s attack. He, however, condemned her action and urged couples to always find amicable means of resolving martial disagreements.

Court also reduced her sentence to 11 years since she had already spent two years on remand.

Dr. Okello’s relatives were not happy with the ruling and argued she should have been handed a life imprisonment term. One of Dr. Okello’s relatives, Joseph Odongo said the sentence was not equivalent to what Atim had done to their son.
