Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu says Madiba has never used the atrocities he suffered behind bars or the burden of pain for revenge against his oppressors.
Tutu has extended his thanks to the Mandela family for sharing the former president with South Africa and the world.
Before his retirement Tutu spoke about witnessing the Rivonia Trial.
“He went to jail as an angry young man. He was appalled at the injustice that he and his comrades had experienced in the Rivonia trial and all of the other instances of injustices visited on his people and the time in prison could have easily been a time of embitterment, anger and an increasing hatred to the white person.”
Tutu held a church service for the late Nelson Mandela in Cape Town.
