Four people have died on spot and 7 others rushed to hospital in critical accident after the truck they were travelling on veered off the road and fell into a valley.
The deceased have been identified as Fred Byakuleka (29), Nakasita (49), Kayiba (35), and 3 year old Nakasita’s grandson indentified as Serwadda. The critically injured include Tonny Kasaga, Robert Lutaya, Kiseeka Kisekulo and one Buuza among others.
The nasty accident occurred at a valley known as Katerero at Katerero village, Byakabanda Sub County in Rakai district. The accident happened after a speeding tipper registration number UAR 374V which was carrying maize, and potatoes to a market and traders on top of their merchandise veered off the road falling into valley killing 4 people and injuring others.
According to the eye witnesses the lorry driver lost control of the speeding vehicle and veered off the road ending up in the valley at the road side.
Rakai district traffic police commander Stella Babisusa, has attributed the accident to speeding by the driver yet he was driving on a slippery road.
She says that police rushed the injured people to Kalisizo hospital where they are nursing various injuries.
She has however warned traders against travelling on top of their luggage on lorries while going to markets because lorries are not allowed to carry passengers.
The incident has led to a rise in a number of accidents registered in the region to 5 since 24th of December. The number of dead in accidents is now 7 people. Victims include a police officer Emmanuel Tabu attached to Field Force Unit (FFU) Kololo police station who was on Friday night killed in a hit and run accident at Lyantonde district.
