Zambia roared into the quarterfinals of the GOtv Cecafa tourney on Wednesday with a brace each from strikers Festus Mbewe and Bornwell Mwape in a 4-0 win triumph over Somalia.
The rout started on the first minute when Bornwell Mwape tapped in after a spill off a corner by Somali keeper Mohammed Sharif .
Festus Mbewe doubled their advantage four minutes later with a clinical finish to underline their intention.
Mwape got his second on 56 minutes before Mbewe capped a fine day with the forth in the 70th minute as Zambia finished on top of group B.
The loss sent the Ocean boys packing from this year’s edition as Zambia cruised to a deserved quarter final berth.
Zambia’s coach Patrice Beaumelle praised his players, ” I am proud of my players as they have been improving in every game and I hope we continue with the same tempo in the crucial quarter final stage,” Beaumelle said after the game.
Tanzania’s mainland national team The Kilimanjaro Stars have sealed their place in the quarterfinals following their 1-0 victory over Burundi to a match played at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
TP Mazembe duo of Mbwana Samatta and Thomas Ulimwengu marked their first appearances in the tournament following their return from club duties.
In form striker Mbwana Samatta connected a well curled cross from Mrisho Ngassa with a solid header to score the only goal of the game in the eighth minute.
With this result, Stars finish with a total of seven points from two wins and a draw as they march on to the quarters.
