Gun Fire Rocks Kireka As Residents Protest Forceful Eviction

The police has today morning fired live ammunition and teargas canisters at the residents of Kasokoso in Kireka a Kampala suburb  after they tried to protest the land eviction that is being spearheaded by National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) which plans to redevelop the slum.

According to an eye witness, two civilians were shot and others injured.

The police is still involved in running battles with the locals as the protest the land eviction.

The land previously leased from Kireka Estate is now owned by NHCC with a freehold interest.

NHCC, Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban development (MLHUD), Slum Dwellers International and Actogether, through a Public Private Partnership, would like to develop the land through a slum upgrade project in collaboration with the resident community.

The proposed Kireka Redevelopment project is planned to involve the on-site redevelopment of the 287 acres.

NHCC plans to redevelop this slum area into mixed development area to accommodate low income, middle and high income as well as commercial and recreation areas.

About 50 acres will be earmarked to accommodate low income earners to cater for about 1,000 affordable housing units. This land for construction of houses of low income earners will be given as compensation of the property that would be demolished to give way for construction of better houses.
