Up to 50 construction workers are believed to be trapped under rubble after the collapse of a half-built shopping centre near the South African coastal city of Durban, emergency services said on Tuesday.
Rescue teams are working feverishly to rescue the people trapped underneath the rubble of the collapsed shopping mall under construction at Tongaat on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.
A further 26 people had been taken to hospital with “massive traumatic injuries”, Chris Botha, a spokesman for the Netcare 911 emergency service, said.
We got reports that about 50 people are trapped underneath the rubble, that’s unconfirmed at the moment but the guys are busy using the hydraulics rescue equipment now to break through the concrete and to try and get through to some of the patients nobody can tell you the cause that would be an investigation from the Department of Labour,” Botha explains.
It is believed that the trapped people are mostly construction workers.
