The Katikiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Kingdom Owekitibwa Charles Peter Mayiga is paying an historic visit to Uganda’s parliament in a bid to boost efforts to collect funds to re-construct the Kasubi Royal Tombs that were destroyed three years ago.
It is the first time a sitting Buganda premier has visited the National Assembly.
After his arrival, Owekitibwa Mayiga met with leaders that included; Speaker of Parliament, Hon Rebecca Kadaga, Nandala Mafabi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament and Government Chief Whip Justin Lumumba among others.
Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon. Rebecca Kadaga says Owekitibwa Mayiga’s visit is historic and should be an example to other kingdoms.
Nandala Mafabi in his personal capacity contributed Shs2m towards reconstruction of Kasubi tombs while Chief whip Justin Lumumba handed over Shs6 million (cash) towards the same cause.
A mysterious fire razed the Kasubi tombs to ashes in March 2010. The fundraising drive began a few months later and the kingdom expects to raise at least Shs10 billion to restore the tombs where four of Buganda’s former kings are buried.
