Heavy Rains Cause Fear In Kasese

Residents of Kilembe in Kasese municipality are living in fear following the heavy rains being experienced in the district. In the past one month, heavy rains have pounded the district causing an increase in the water levels of River Nyamwamba.

This has caused fear among the residents who say that the river might flood again.

In May, floods ravaged the district leaving six people dead and property worth billions of shillings destroyed.

Some of the residents residing in Kilembe are now relocating to Kasese town to seek accommodation.

Joseph Tumusiime, a resident of Katiri ward, says that at night residents don’t sleep in their homes fearing that the floods will sweep their houses away. He says that some residents seek refuge outside their houses until the rains stop.

Tumusiime wants the district local government to construct temporary structures in Kasese town for the residents in Kilembe.

Pascal Kasoke, the LCIII chairman for Bulembia division, which was affected most during the floods in May says that more than 60 residents have since last month left their homes.

Seliveriyo Mukobi, the Kasese municipal council environment officer, says that residents living near Kilembe and on the slopes of Mountain Rwenzori have been advised to relocate to safer places until the rains stop. Mukobi however says that the residents should live with relatives and friends, since the municpal council doesn’t have where to relocate them.

Meanwhile Kasoke says that the government should also complete repairing the bridges and roads that were destroyed during the May floods. Kasoke said that most of the roads and the bridges that were washed away have never been worked on.
