The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leaders in Kasese district, western Uganda have launched a campaign to raise over Shs26 Million that Former Busongora South MP and FDC Stalwart Christopher Kibanzanga owes Kasese district chairman Lt. Col. Dura Mawa Muhindo.
The money accrued from court costs following the withdrawal of a court petition challenging the election of Lt. Col Dura Mawa to the office of District Chairman.
The two rivaled for the seat in the 2011 general election. Kibanzanga, a runner-up in the polls then petitioned the High Court contesting the manner in which the electoral commission organized the election. He however, withdrew the petition reportedly on request by Rwenzururu Kingdom elders after 24 hours.
But Col. Mawa went ahead to ask court to order him pay costs for the resources he had spent on hiring lawyers to prepare the defense.
Last week, Kibazanga who is a Chief Prince of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu was arrested by court bailiffs in Fort Portal over nonpayment of the money awarded to Lt. Col. Dura Mawa Muhindo. He was released shortly.
Yesterday, FDC leaders led by the Acting General Secretary, Flavia Masika launched the district wide fundraising to save Kibazanga.
Masika says they are collecting the money as individuals to pay Col. Mawa because Kibanzanga had contested as a party flag bearer and in the interest of the people of Kasese.
The campaign launched at Kizungu in Kasese Municipality today heads to Bukonzo East constituency with a rally at Kisinga sub-county headquarters.
