Former Forum for Democratic Change president Rtd Colonel Kiiza Besigye and embattled Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago are being held at Central Police Station and Kiira Road police station respectively, according to a reliable source within FDC .
There were reports earlier that the two were released late last night and their whereabouts were unknown..
Besigye beat the 24-hour surveillance at his home yesterday to emerge in the middle of Kampala’s Central Business District.
The former FDC boss emerged from a shopping arcade on Ben Kiwanuka Street at around midday and immediately a stampede ensued as traders crowded around him, cheering.
It was at this point that police swung into action and spent close to 1hr to clear the crowds, get close to Besigye and tow his car to the Central Police Station (CPS).
Lukwago who faces possible impeachment was rearrested on his way to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) where he had been ordered to appear and be told the reason for his arrest on Monday.
On Monday, police arrested Lukwago at his home in Rubaga Division in Kampala and was detained at Naggalama police in Mukono district. He was arrested hours to a rally called by mainly opposition leaders.
Last Friday, Betty Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality MP announced plans by opposition politicians to stage a rally at Nakivubo blue settlement primary school to explain the KCCA tribunal report to city dwellers.
The report issued by the KCCA tribunal chaired by Justice Catherine Bamugemeirere implicates Lukwago for alleged incompetence, failure to sign council minutes and abuse of office.
