Nelson Habasa is said to have failed to repay shillings 15 million he borrowed from Francis Kamugisha, a Kabale-based money lender.

Habasa, 35, is said to have picked the money from a money lender in 2011 after he decided to contest as an independent against Henry Banyenzaki in the general elections shortly after leaving the Forum for Democratic Change citing corruption in the party.

Habasa who currently works with Reynolds Construction Company Limited as a safety officer was arrested in Kampala and transported to Kabale district where he appeared before Kabale chief Magistrate Amos Kwizera.

The former parliamentary aspirant had picked an initial amount of shillings 4 million which he never committed himself to pay and it kept on accumulating up to-date when the amount reached 15 million shillings.

Kamugisha, the money lender, told court that the former parliamentary aspirant has been avoiding him since 2011 and has always declined to pick his phone calls.

The Kabale Chief Magistrate Amos Kwizera committed Habasa to Ndorwa government prison for six months or to pay the 15.9 million shillings debt plus legal fees amounting to 1.4 million shillings.

Shortly after the ruling, as Habasa waited for the prisons vehicle to take him to Ndorwa, he told journalists he is being persecuted by his political adversaries.
