Three people died instantly and 14 were admitted in critical condition when a taxi they were travelling in collided with a saloon vehicle at Bukonde village, three kilometres along the Bugiri – Busia highway early today.
The accident occurred at around 7.30 am when the speeding taxi registration number UAP 964 P collided with a saloon vehicle corona registration number UAJ 265 T.
According to Sande Omolo, an eyewitness, the driver of the taxi which was heading to Kampala from Tororo collided with the corona vehicle as he attempted to overtake a trailer which was moving towards Bugiri.
The dead were identified as Velontino Semuyemba the driver of the taxi and resident of Namawojolo Mukono district, Fatiya Umar a lady of Somali origin, and a one Kenneth Kaka.
Some of the injured were identified as Ganecious Omeja an employee of Tororo cement industries, Engineer Isma Kiiza, Fred Onyango the chairperson of Tororo central market, and one Umar Faizol.
The officer in charge traffic at Bugiri central police station, Andrew Okalabya attributed the accident to recklessness on the part of the taxi driver.
He expressed concern over the increase in the number of accidents at the same spot since the start of the year.
Okalabya said a total of 23 people have died in road accidents at the same spot since the start of the year.
