The ministry of health has said that it needs more money to import more condoms noting that there is likely to be a shortage since some of the donors withdrew their support.
Appearing before the parliamentary committee on health on Monday, the ministry officials said that although there is no shortage yet, the country needs at least 20 million condoms per month and any number less than that will not be enough.
Vastha Kibirige, the coordinator condom distribution, says the ministry is expecting more condoms at the end of this month or the beginning of September.
She however, told the committee that they need money to test the condoms first. She said that a batch which contains about 400 condoms goes for 280 dollars which is not yet availed to them.
She however assures the public that there is no need to panic saying that there is still enough condoms, but the ministry needs to secure money for more before the current stock runs out.
Kibirige said the only problem is that people are still shy about condoms and they do not go to hospitals to ask for them. She said the ministry is trying to engage as many agents and other implementing partners as possible to take the condoms to the people and communities.
The MPs said it is an issue which needs to be addressed with urgency and pledged to ensure government treats it as an urgent matter. Gulu woman MP Betty Aol said condoms are the most commonly used protection especially among the unmarried youth against HIV and unwanted pregnancies.
