Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has today revealed that it is ready to try former Uganda Media Centre Deputy Director Colonel Shaban Bantariza for fraud.
This revelation was made at the General Court Martial in Makindye, Kampala.
The army’s lawyer Frederick Kangwamu informed court presided over by Brigadier Moses Sentongo Diba that investigations into the matter had been wound up and they were ready to try him on September 26.
Colonel Bantariza, who was once the army spokesperson, faces three counts of fraud, forgery, and falsification of documents.
He allegedly committed the said offences in 2011 at the National Leadership Institute (NLAI) Kyankwazi where he was director.
Prosecution alleges that Bantariza purported to have bought a tractor and its facilities at 67 million shillings yet the same had been donated to the institute by the Ministry of Finance. He was charged in July before the General Court Martial and granted bail after denying the charges.
Bantariza had come to check on the progress of inquiries into charges against him when he was informed of the trial date.
He is expected to appear on September 26.
