Traders Injured in Kabale Accident

13 traders are nursing severe injuries they sustained in a motor accident along Muhanga–Kisizi Road in Rukiga County Kabale district on Monday.

The accident occurred at Kyerero swamp, about 4KM from Muhanga town council at around 11:15am after a Fuso truck number UAJ 114R veered off the road and overturned several times, injuring 13 people on board.

Most of the accident victims lost their arms and legs.  8 of the accident victims were rushed to Kabale regional referral hospital, while the remaining victims were admitted at Kisizi Hospital in Rukungiri district.

Some of the accident victims are Justus Kiconjo, Apollo Karuhanga, Denis Mukunde, Peace Kiconjo, Nathan Muyambi, Jane Mbabazi, Santrina Kansiime, Atuheire Jesica, all residents of Rubare Ntungamo district. Ely Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson says that the accident victim were on their way to Rushebeya Market in Rwamucucu sub county Kabale district.

He says preliminary police investigations point to over loading and reckless driving as cause of the accident. Maate explains that in addition to carrying traders, the ill fated truck was loaded with iron bars and merchandise. He says the wreckage of the vehicle was towed to Kabale Central Police Station as police hunts the driver of the ill fated truck, who fled into hiding after the accident.
