Former Geography Department Head Associate Professor Hannington Ssengendo was over the weekend unveiled as the new Vice Chancellor for Nkumba University.
Prof Ssengendo now replaces celebrated Mathematician Prof Edward Paul Mugambi whose contract expired on December 18th 2012.
Mr Ssengendo (59) is the university’s third Vice Chancellor since Nkumba University started in 1994.
He obtained a PHD in Urban Planning from Nottingham University in 1993. In 1995, he introduced to Makerere the Undergraduate program of Urban Planning and taught Urban and Regional Development planning there and produced many professionals in urban planning.
From 1998 to 2003, Assoc Prof Ssengendo was Associate Dean of faculty of Arts, Makerere University. From 1994, He was head of Department of Geography where he had been teaching the subject since 1986.
Throughout the years, he sat on many Senate and University committees and occasionally was called to be Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics and Finance with Administration) at Nkumba.
Prof Ssengendo takes over from Prof Paul Mugambi whose contract expired in December last year but the university appointing authority requested him to continue serving in the acting capacity until the 19th of June 2013 as they prepare to fill the gap.
Prof. Mugambi took over from the founding Vice Chancellor of Nkumba University, Late Prof. William Sentaza Kajubi in 2008.
Close sources in the University say the Prof Mugambi wants to return as lecturer to start the faculty of sciences at Nkumba University before he retires.
Nkumba University is one of the largest private Universities in Uganda established in 1994. It was granted a Charter in 2006 by the Government of Uganda and aims at promoting education in business, arts, social sciences, sciences, technical, communication and cultural fields as well as stimulate the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship.
