Just over a month shaking up the top leadership of the army, President Yoweri Museveni has made more changes at senior command level.
In the changes announced on Friday evening, Brig Sam Kavuma, who recently graduated from Kenya National Defence College, is appointed to Command African Union Regional Task Force based at Yambio, South Sudan. The force is tasked to counter atrocities of Lord’s Resistance Army rebels and their leader Joseph Kony.
Brig Kavuma takes over from Brig Dick Olum, who has been appointed to command the Uganda Contingent in Somalia.
From Somalia, Brig Michael Ondoga, who has been Uganda’s Contingent Commander, goes to Nairobi as Military Attaché at Uganda’s High Commission in Kenya. He replaces Brig Clovis Kalyebara who died on May 15 this year. Brig Ondoga is a graduate of USA War College.
Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, also made changes in the Second and Third Infantry divisions. Brig Peter Elwelu, who has been commanding the Moroto-based 3rd division, has been sent to Mbarara to command the 2nd Division. Elwelu fills the gap left by Brig Patrick Kankiriho who died suddenly in April this year.
Brig Elwelu has previously commanded Uganda’s Contingent in Somalia, in addition to fighting LRA in DRC, Central Africa and South Sudan. He is a graduate of China National Defence College.
In a statement, UPDF spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda says the appointments take immediate effect.
On May 23, President Museveni reshuffled top army leadership, appointing General Katumba Wamala Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). General Wamala took over from General Aronda Nyakairima who was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs.
