The proposed secession of the Bagungu from Bunyoro took center stage during the 19th coronation anniversary celebrations of the Omukama Gafabusa Iguru on Tuesday. Leaders in Bullisa district openly opposed the secession talk. Last month, agroup of Bagungu from Buliisa district unveiled their plan for the creation of Bukama Bwa Bugungu, an independent kingdom from Bunyoro. The issue has however been bashed by Bunyoro kingdom officials and the king himself referring to it as diversionary.

On Tuesday, during Bunyoro Empango celebrations at Karuziika palace, Buliisa Lc5 Chairman Fred Lukumu delved into the Bagungu history. He explained that the Bagungu were great commanders in Omukama Kabalega’s force and that Buguungu was a county under Bunyoro. Lukumu said those saying Bugungu is not part of Bunyoro are ignorant of history. He assured the king that Bugungu is still part of Bunyoro Kingdom and it will remain so.

Earlier in the morning Stephen Mukitale Birahwa, the Buliisa Member of Parliament had also dismissed thesecession issue saying it was being engineered by people with selfish interests. He vowed to fight the move by mobilizing his electorates to ignore those spearheading the idea.

Arnest Kiiza, Bunyoro affairs Minister says he has since been disturbed by such a move, saying it is a move by self seekers to disunite Bunyoro and divert people from core issues.

In his address the Omukama repeated his call for the Bagungu to disregard the secession talk but embrace unity for development.
