Teachers to Get Full Salaries by Easter

The Ministry of Public Service has set  Easter as the deadline for  the payment of salaries, for  teachers that missed or were underpaid during the month of February.
The deadline was set in a closed door meeting attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Service, members of the Uganda National Teachers Union- Kampala Branch, and officials from Kampala Capital City Authority. In the meeting they  resolved that the teachers who missed their salaries shall be paid by Easter period next week.50 teachers from the five divisions of Kampala had earlier gathered at Buganda Road Primary School playground to demand for their salaries. The teachers intended to march to the Public Service ministry to table their salary demands. The teachers are unpleasant about unexplained salary deductions, for the month of February.Among the teachers at the ground was Grace Akurut, a primary five teacher at Makerere University Primary School along Bombo road. She says that she received 220,000 shillings compared to her standard salary of 313,950 shillings. Grace wants to know what caused the deduction.

Gonzaga Ssensambe, the vice chairperson of UNATU who attended the meeting told our reporter, that the meeting reassures all affected teachers that the issue will be sorted by Easter, which is next week.

Gonzaga says other resolutions reached in meeting include the ministry of public service to start share the payroll with the leadership of UNATU. This should help to eliminate the salary related abnormalities.

The meeting also learned that the payment of allowances for science teachers will start this April.

James Twehayo, the UNATU general secretary, however strikes a note of caution because none of the resolutions have been documented. He says should the ministry fail to do as promised, the teachers will lay down their tools.

Ann Galiwango, the KCCA director in charge of education and social services, says the resolutions will soon be communicated to the public.
