Salaam Musumba, the Vice President for the Forum for Democratic Change ( FDC) party has been arrested in Butaleja district for alleged voters’ bribery.

Musumba also the Kamuli district LC 5 chairperson was picked up by the police at around 8:30pm, Sunday night together with five other FDC party supporters from Busolwe Township after they were allegedly found distributing freebies to voters to bribe them.

Vincent Ssekate, the Police Deputy Spokesperson who is in Butaleja district, identified the other five suspects as Ramadhan Wegula, John Patrick Hamba, Aggrey Angole, Mutwalim Kayondo and Alli Musid.

They were found distributing to voters freebies like posho, bars of soap, paraffin, cooking oil, basins, mattresses and lumps to bribe them to vote in favor of the FDC party in the Monday’s election.

Ssekate said they confiscated the items as exhibits and are being kept at police.

He said the suspects were taken straightaway to Tororo Central Police Station where they are being held.

Ssekate said earlier at around 1:00pm on Sunday, police also arrested two people, all resident of Nabiganda trading center for allegedly inciting violence. He identified them as Mbejja Mubiru and Fred Magambo. He said they were also all taken to Tororo Central police station.

Meanwhile, police also arrested John Byamukhama, the husband to Sarah Annet Logose, an independent candidate in the Butaleja woman parliamentary by-election.

Byamukhama, the director of Kyambogo Logistic Services Limited was picked at around 8:00pm from Good News Guest House in Busolwe were he was sleeping for yet unknown reason. Ssekate has however denied knowledge of his arrest.

Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday morning police also arrested Francis Mwijukye and Sam Mugumya, aides to Dr. Kizza Besigye for alleged electoral malpractice.

They were found training a group of 151 FDC polling agents ahead of Monday’s by-election at Good News Guest House in Busolwe town council, when police led by Sam Omala, Kampala  Metropolitan North Operations Commander accused them of mobilizing their colleagues to disrupt election and bribe voters.

They were held briefly at Busolwe police post before transferring them to Tororo Central Police Station where they spent a night.

Wafula Ogutu, the FDC party spokesperson has rubbished it as concocted, the allegation of voter bribery put against Salam Musumba and her group by the police.

He explained that just like any other party official Musumba has come to monitor and observe the election when she also paid a courtesy call to his grandmother where she handed to her two kilos of meat and posho when police followed and arrested her with concocted allegations of voter bribery.

Wafula had earlier accused the police of taking side and arresting selectively. He said several NRM officials from Kampala and other districts have been deployed in Butaleja and are moving around to bribe voters but police cannot act accordingly against them.

Polls for the Butaleja parliamentary by-election opens on Monday amidst tight security from the joint military and police forces.

Lieutenant General Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police is overseeing the security in the election.

Five candidates including, Florence Andiru Nebanda for NRM, Felistas Namwihiri, for FDC, Betty Hamba, Sarah Annet Logose, and Munaba Perusi all independents are vying for the seat.

  1. Has police been sleeping all these years, how come i have never heard of any movement supporter/leader arrested. they have done this stuff for years, they set the precedent.

  2. I wish you loose this election guyz. You are only itimidating people. Let people choose their own leader without your influence.
