President Mwai Kibaki is set to officially launch the electronic voter registration exercise by Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) today.

IEBC Chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan said last week that the exercise will be carried out over one month, including weekends, and thereafter the register will be published for public inspection.

He urged Kenyans to come out in numbers to register, while warning that the electoral body would not grant any extension because of time constraints leading up to the next general election scheduled for March, 2013.

Intensive training for 29,000 registration clerks at provincial headquarters was conducted last week and the registration exercise is targeting at least 18 million voters out of a possible 26 million.
