Two police officers were on Sunday evening stabbed to death by machete wielding assailants in Kasese and took off with two guns

The two officers were identified as Danson Tweheyo hailing from Bushenyi and Karemera from Ibanda, and both were at the rank of Police Constable. They were working as security guards under the tourism police at Simba Tourist Lodge.

According to Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Police used sniffer dogs which led them to the office of the Assistant Manager, Juma Tembo but they are yet to confirm whether he too was involved in the crime. Tembo has already been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

“The two police officers were stabbed with machetes and their SMG guns taken. We suspect that the killers were many. Offices at the lodge were also broken into and a safe containing unspecified amounts of money along with computers stolen.” Kaweesi said during a news conference at the Police headquarters in Naguru on Monday.

Kaweesi was however quick to separate the incident from the insurgency that has characterized the Rwenzori region saying “this was a criminal incident and not an insurgency as some are speculating.”

He referred to the incident as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘terrifying’
