At least 15 soccer fans have been killed and two dozens wounded in a stadium stampede in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A riot broke out on Sunday after the referee of a match between the two popular soccer teams of ASV Club and Tout Puissant Mazembe announced five minutes of added time near the end of the game.

Soccer hooligans started to shoot projectiles onto the field at the Tata Raphael Stadium, forcing the referee to whistle the end of the match in extra time before the game ended.

Police then intervened and fired tear gas, causing further chaos and the stampede.

“Four policemen were harassed by supporters. When they fired tear gas, the stampede began, causing the deaths,” said Emmanuel Akweti, a city official.

A commission of inquiry has now been set up to investigate the incident.

Stampedes are rampant at crowded events in Congo. Last month, a stampede at a crowded music festival killed at least 21 people.
