Ugandan In US Sentenced For Marriage Fraud
Ugandan Rashid Kakande was in 2011 sentenced to two years in jail for masterminding a grand marriage scam. Kakande had paid more than a dozen Maine residents to marry and recruit others to marry immigrants, many of whom had overstayed their visas.
A Ugandan man who helped arrange a scam marriage in the US state of Maine so another Ugandan man could become a legal permanent resident of the United States is going to jail.
A judge on Friday sentenced Ronald Serunjogi, 35, of Saco, to four months in jail and four months of home confinement.
Serunjogi was convicted of helping Sampson Sengoonzi, who had overstayed his tourist visa, pay a Lewiston woman to marry Sengoonzi.
Serunjogi was convicted in May this year by a jury in U.S. District Court of marrying a Maine resident in order to become a U.S. citizen following a three-day trial, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Serunjogi was also accused of assisting Sengoonzi in preparing immigration documents.
The two formerly of Biddeford, paid Alice May, 28, of Lewiston to marry Sengoonzi, according to a press release issued by the U.S. attorney’s office. Immigration officials detected the fraud.
Sengoonzi pleaded guilty to a marriage fraud charge in March 2012 and was sentenced to one month in prison. He was deported after his release.
