Uganda To Host U-19 World Cup Cricket Qualifiers

Uganda has been confirmed to host the 2014 Africa U-19 World Cup qualifiers May 24-31 in Kampala.

Justine Ligyalingi, the Chief Executive Officer told Red Pepper Online, today that although Kenya had also bid to host the event, the International Cricket Council (ICC) picked Uganda. Ligyalingi said the this was yet another chance for Uganda to prove that it has the capacity to host such a big event.

He explained that although Uganda has previously hosted top African tournaments for the seniors and women, this is going to be the biggest ever tournament the country is hosting because of it’s statute and the number of countries taking part. He explained that while the International Cricket body will take care of the accommodation for all teams and meals, Uganda will handle the logistical expenses.

The best team in the tournament will take part in the 2014 U-19 World Cup in UAE. The eight countries that will take part in the event include; Uganda, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and Nigeria.

Speaking about the Ugandan team, Ligyalingi said the team has been training for the last three months under the watchful eyes of coaches Davis Turinawe and John Trust Mayeku and should perform well.

The tournament will be played on three Ovals at Lugogo, Kyambogo and the Entebbe.
