Uganda Cranes face Liberia today evening

The Uganda Cranes and Lone Stars of Liberia today go into their 2014 World Cup qualifier in Monrovia with both teams looking for their first maximum points of the campaign.

A day earlier, the other teams in Group J – Senegal and Angola – will go head-to-head in Conakry, Guinea as the race to Brazil enters round three of matches.

The Lions of Teranga as the Senegalese are called already top standings with four points from two games while Uganda and Angola are second and third respectively on two points apiece. Coach Frank Jericho Nagbe’s Liberia toil with one.

And that is the more reason they must win in front of their home fans and their legendary striker George Weah if they are to retain any hopes of ever making the global scene.

The same can be said of Bobby Williamson’s Uganda, who badly need the three points to retain hopes of progressing.

“We are still looking for our first maximum points at home as well in the campaign and it’s not an easy group,” said Bobby Williamson ahead of the tie, adding, “It’s gonna be difficult.

“Angola went there and managed to get a draw. So a draw won’t be the end of the world depending on what happens in the other game (between Senegal and Angola).”

Bobby is expected to start with Dennis Onyango in goal with skipper Andy Mwesigwa, Henry Kalungi, Godfrey Walusimbi and Dennis Guma completing the defence.

Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito, Musa Mudde, Moses Oloya and Joseph Ochaya are odds on to form a four-man midfield, with Emma Okwi and Geoffrey Massa favourites to lead the line.

Cranes will have to worry about Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Anthony Laffor and Turkish based winger Tonia Tisdell.

The two boast of qualities to score and create, and can take on the most of organized defences.

The last time the two sides met was in the 2000 Afcon qualifiers. Uganda edged Liberia 1-0 in Kampala, with the Lone Stars coming tops 2-0 in Monrovia.
