Uganda Beats Liberia to Defend 8 year Home Record

Tony Mawejje’s goal was enough to give hosts Uganda three points against Liberia in a 2014 World Cup qualifier played at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole this afternoon. The cranes maintained their 8 year home unbeaten record

Du Sahel striker Emmanuel Okwi beautifully turned on a neat pass for Mawejje who slotted the ball past advancing Sherman Nathaniel.

The Cranes tried to press the Lone Stars, but failed to get a second goal as the game went into recess with the visitors making two attempts at goal.

With a hungrier Anthony Laffour, the Lone Stars returned charged and pressed Uganda, but failed to put the ball at the back of the net. Uganda’s second half substitute Martin Mutumba who replaced Kizito Luwagga was the only player booked.

Liberia made two dangerous attacks at the Uganda goal mouth, but found the St. George goalkeeper Robert Odonkara steady.

Laffour questioned the fairness of the referee to our reporter before sadly adding that such is the nature of football.

Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic consoled the Liberia players after the game.

Micho who celebrates his first win in-charge of the Cranes said getting the three points was very important before facing Angola next weekend. He said while the Cranes had started well, they failed to maintain the momentum and this is something they have to work on ahead of the Angola game.

Uganda now moves to second place of Group J behind Senegal.
