Beleaguered city businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba was on Wednesday evening remanded to Luzira Prison on forgery charges after queries were raised on the status of his sureties.
Prosecutors from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) objected to some of Basajja’s sureties that he presented at Buganda Road Court on Tuesday.
Queries emerged specifically on the identification of some sureties’ residence statuses, raising questions whether they were substantive enough to stand surety for an accused in court.
On Tuesday evening, Basajja was arrested at Entebbe International Airport just hours after court had granted him bail under private prosecution that was on Wednesday overruled by the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate, Irene Akankwasa, as null and void.
He is due to appear at the Anti-Corruption Court based in Kololo on Thursday at 2:00pm.
