Sergeant Robert Okiror, a UPDF soldier attached to the 7th battalion in Kisoro district is in trouble for shooting to death two civilians in a pub. Okiror is being held by Kisoro police in connection with the murder of Teopista Nyiramugisha Alias Mama Derrick, the proprietor of B. Coy pub in Kisoro town council and a waitress only identified as Annette.

The incident is reported to have occurred in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Trouble is said to have started after Okiror was expelled from the pub by Mama Derrick after he threatened to beat up one of the patrons.

However, Okiror wouldn’t have any of this. He rushed to the barracks and returned with an Ak47 rifle and opened fire killing Mama Derrick and Annette.  Unconfirmed information obtained by our reporter shows that Okiror has been in relationship with Mama Derrick, but they had a misunderstanding on Christmas after he accused her of cheating on him with other soldiers.

Bosco Lolo Otim, the Kisoro District Police has described the incident as unfortunate.  He says they have managed to recover the gun used by the suspect in the shooting.

Otim says the suspect will be charged with murder once investigations into the incident are complete. The shooting of the two people, brings to five the number of civilians killed in shootings involving UPDF soldiers within a space of one week. On Sunday last week, a UPDF soldier identified as Patrick Odongo opened fire at a pub in Kiwanawataka in Kampala killing three people and injuring the same number. According to police it all started after Odongo got involved in a quarrel with his girlfriend Scovia Okello.

It is alleged that shortly after the quarrel; Odongo rushed to Mbuya military barracks and picked up his gun. He returned to the pub and opened fire killing his girlfriend Scovia Okello, Caesar Kere and a five- year- old minor only identified as Junior. The injured who are nursing gunshot wounds at Mulago national referral hospital are Odongkara, Agnes Adong and Denis Kitala.

The incident also joins a string of shooting incidents involving UPDF soldiers and women. In March this year, a UPDF solider shot ten people dead at a pub Bombo following a brawl over a women.

It came after another UPDF soldier shot dead three people including his wife for allegedly squandering his saving following his return from duty in Somalia.
