Tororo police are holding James Othieno Obonyo, a pastor attached to Assemblies of God church together with four others in connection to a robbery at Push and Win Casino in Nagongera Town council on Friday last week.
The other suspects are Ronny Ochola, Ramadhan Egesa, the former marketing manager Push and win Casino, Dickson Nduhura, also a former employee and the Manager Rachael Mwagale.
The suspects are accused of conniving to rob gambling machines from the casino.
They were loaded on the Pastor’s Ipsum vehicle registration number UAS 671W after Mwagale opened the casino doors for her accomplices.
The theft of the machines was brought to the attention of the police by the owner of the building hosting the casino, who claims to have been placed at gun point when she became suspicious and asked Mwagale what was happening.
Police immediately swung into action and intercepted the suspect before they could reach Tororo town but they fled into hiding.
On Sunday morning, police picked up Dickson Nduhura. Obonyo and the other suspects were arrested when they went to secure the release of Nduhura on bond.
Police recovered 2 .5 million shillings from the Pastor’s vehicle and another 500,000 shillings from Mwagale.
Michael Odongo, the Malaba regional police spokesperson said that the suspects had planned to sell the machines to Ronny Ochola, a businessman in Gulu.
Odongo says the pastor and his accomplices have been charged with burglary and theft under file number CRB 271/2013.
