Kasubi Tombs Reconstruction: Nambooze Asks MPs To Donate Part Of Their Salary

Ugandan lawmaker, Betty Nambooze has asked her colleagues under the Buganda Caucus to donate part of their pay to the development and reconstruction of Kasubi Royal Tombs that were destroyed by fire a few years back.
The Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament (MP) Â notes that this will enable the kingdom to sustain its development projects so that it does not always ask for money from donors and other sources for development.
This comes at a time when the Buganda Kingdom Premier (Katikiiro) Charles Peter Mayiga is preparing to visit the Buganda MPs under the Buganda Caucus and the Parliamentary community immediately after members return from recess.
The Premier’s visit was scheduled for Monday next week at Parliament. But the Buganda caucus sitting this morning has requested that the visit be postponed so that MPs who have already gone on recess and wish Buganda well are able to be present when the premier visits.
Nambooze says that the contributions and pledges from members have already started. She says these contributions will be presented to the Premier to support the construction of the Tombs.
Nambooze noted that also other MPs form different parts of the country will be requested to fundraise for the reconstruction of Kasubi Royal Tombs.
Nambooze said that they had approached the Speaker of Parliament on the Kasubi Tombs matter and the Katikiiro’s visit and she pledged 10 million shillings towards the reconstruction.
The leader of Opposition Nathan Nandala Mafabi had made a pledge though the amount was not disclosed.
Ann Maria Nankabirwa, Woman Representative of Kyankwazi, noted that the Buganda Premier is not only visiting the Buganda Caucus at Parliament but actually the entire Parliament community.
She said that to receive the Premier warmly, the parliamentary community will contribute generously to one of the Katikiiro’s top most projects to accomplish the reconstruction of Kasubi Royal Tombs.
Nankabirwa said that it is upon them and their responsibility as leaders to contribute to the reconstruction of the Tombs on top of the contributions made from the different counties of Buganda.
Kampala Central MP Muhammed Nsereko noted that MP Nambooze’s proposal is a good move since it’s the subjects of the kingdom responsible for the maintenance and development of the kingdom’s assets.
Since his appointment, Katikiiro Charles Peter Mayiga has said that the reconstruction of the Kasubi Royal Tombs is one of his major goals and it should be completed by March 2014.
The main House at Kasubi Royal Tombs and Royal Palace housing remains of four kings Muzibu Azaala Mpanga was gutted by fire on 16th March 2010. Since then the Kingdom has embarked on its renovation and putting into place measures of protecting the palace from more fire occurrences.
