Uganda’s Internal Affairs Minister General Aronda Nyakairima has summoned Luweero cult leaders following reports that they are encouraging their followers to reject the on going National ID registration exercise.

The religious cult, which is locally known as Abajiiri literally translated as “gospel preachers” is found in the villages of Makonkonyigo, Kakoola, Mpeeka, Nakasejere among others in Kamira Sub County in Luweero. They have recruited more than 300 believers and the cult is led by Sunday Mujiiri.

The local leaders in Luweero led by Deputy Resident Commissioner Persis Namuganza petitioned Minister Aronda Nyakairima on Friday demanding his intervention after they sensitized cult believers to participate in National ID registration exercise

However, their response was negative describing the exercise as satanic.

Namuganza says that the cult leaders and followers have rejected the exercise arguing that their religious beliefs bar them from participating in the process. They say there is no reason to register as they don’t vote, use bank services or other modern conveniences.

Namuganza adds that the cult members have said they can only participate in the registration after being convinced by Minister Aronda or President Yoweri Museveni in person.

The Luweero Vice chairman George Balwana says the same group has rejected other government programmes that include immunization, formal education and eat raw food and all efforts to sensitize them have failed. Balwana asked Minister Nyakairima to dialogue with them.

General Aronda Nyakairima has now summoned the cult leaders to meet him on Thursday next week at his office in Kampala for dialogue. He also threatened to have the cult leaders arrested if they failed to honour the invitation.

The minister added that the cult is dangerous because it may lead to a Kanungu-like incident where more than 1000 people were burnt to death by cult leader Joseph Kibwetere after deception.

Efforts to talk to the cult leader Sunday Mujiiri were unsuccessful but the Chairman LC 3 of Kamira sub county Livingstone Kategeya is skeptical Minister Aronda can persuade the members to register.

Kategeya says that the cult members believe that the National ID is symbolic representation of the satanic 666 mark which they were warned about in the Bible.

According to General Aronda, they expect to register at least 18 million Ugandans before the end of August 2014.

  1. And whoever gets a national ID card, will automatically become a member of the NRM party and will be deemed to have voted for Mr. Museveni in 2016.
