Archbishop Ntagali counsels legislators

The Archbishop Church of Uganda, Rev. Stanley Ntagali has warned Members of Parliament against making empty promises to their constituents.

The Archbishop made the remarks while addressing the congregation at the welcome service for the Members of the 10th Parliament held at Parliament on Thursday, 15th September 2016.

“We are grateful to each and every one of you who has been supporting various church projects in your respective constituencies however, I would like to strongly discourage you against making promises that you cannot fulfill,” Rev. Ntagali said.

Ntagali noted that there is a tendency of Members to promise a lot during campaigns, which they cannot deliver.

“Instead, serve with utmost truth while being available and accountable,” he advised.

The Archbishop urged the MPs to be united in their various constituencies regardless of their political affiliation and support the church.

“As the church, we acknowledge all Members and we will be pray for you without discrimination,” he said.

The cleric apologised on behalf of Church leaders who participated in politics by taking sides and decampaigning politicians.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, said she was looking forward to a closer and supportive relationship between Parliament and the Church.

“Recently, on the Private Members Bill that was introduced by Hon. Robert Ssekitoleko, on the removal of age limits for judges, I was attacked and it was said that I had run away from the controversial Bill yet I was out on official duty,” Kadaga said.

She said it is unconstructive to the nation and unacceptable to point fingers at each other.
