666 Cult Leaders Arrested for Preaching Against National ID Exercise
Two leaders of the tripple six (666) cult who are accused of sabotaging national identification card exercise in greater Masaka region have been arrested in Ssembabule.
The suspects are self -styled 666 Bishop Nathan Muliisa and his deputy Peter Kaisinga.
The duo has been put under preventive house arrest in Ntusi. They have been on the police wanted listed for several months.
Muliisa and Kaisinga are accused of discouraging their followers from taking part in the national identity card exercise. Police estimates that Nathan Muliisa has over 10000 followers around the country.
Muliisa and his followers refuse to have anything to do with any exercise that uses numbers. Muliisa is also wanted by police for stopping his followers from sending their children to school. He also discourages them from going to hospitals for medical attention and bathing.
Joseph Ssekabiito, the Sembabule Resident District Commissioner, says the security committee resolved to hunt for Muliisa after his followers revealed that he gave the orders not to participate in the national ID registeration. Ssekabiito says Muliisa was arrested in Ntusi Sub County.
Ssekabiito, who is also the District Security Committee chairperson, says Muliisa is now under preventive house arrest. He says Muliisa is being pressed to persuade his followers to go register. Muliisa has also been barred from preaching in Ssembabule because he is not registered as a religious leader.
Latif Ngonzi, the Sembabule District Returning officer, says Muliisa’s movement had affected the national Identity card exercise in Ntusi and Lwemiyaga Sub County where he has a big following. He claims that many people have refused to register in these areas.
Robert Walugembe, the Sembabule DPC says these two suspects are under police surveillance in their homes. They are detained at their house in Ntusi.
Aronda Nyakiyirima, the Minister of Internal Affairs told local media that cultism is one of the biggest challenges affecting national identity card project. He says government has recorded cases of cultism in all regions in the country.
Nyakayirima however says he has ordered security agencies to document all of them before serious action is taken against them.
Last week, Aronda Nyakairima summoned Luweero cult leaders following reports that they are encouraging their followers to reject the ongoing National ID registration exercise.
The religious cult, which is locally known as Abajiiri literally translated as gospel preachers are found in the villages of Makonkonyigo, Kakoola, Mpeeka, Nakasejere among others in Kamira Sub County in Luweero. They have recruited more than 300 believers and the cult is leader by Sunday Mujiiri.
